Air India Plans Nonstop Delhi–Toronto on New 787-9 From August 1, If Airspace Cooperates

For years, the Delhi–Toronto trip has asked westbound travelers to budget something close to a full day: roughly twenty hours door-to-door when Air India’s outbound flight still made a technical fuel stop in Vienna. From August 1, 2026, the airline plans to put that clock closer to seventeen hours by deploying a brand-new, line-fit Boeing 787-9 and dropping the Vienna stop, subject to available airspace. The same day, daily service returns after a thinned summer, and Premium Economy arrives on the route for the first time.

Air India’s July 22 newsroom release is specific about the product and careful about the nonstop. The new 787-9 replaces older widebody flying that needed the Vienna halt on the longer westbound routing. The airline’s own framing cuts the Delhi–Toronto journey from about twenty hours, including the stop, to about seventeen hours if the stop stays out. Toronto–Delhi already operates nonstop at up to sixteen hours. Bookings are open for AI187 and AI188 through Air India’s channels and agents.

The schedule that matters for packing and pickup is plain. AI187 is listed to leave Delhi at 1:45 a.m. and reach Toronto Pearson at 9:30 a.m. the same calendar day. AI188 leaves Toronto at 12:30 p.m. and arrives Delhi at 2:05 p.m. the next day. A morning Pearson arrival can leave a usable first afternoon for grandparents, a hotel day-use, or a same-day onward hop inside Canada, if immigration and bags cooperate. Recheck live times before you promise anyone a lunch reservation.

Frequency is part of the news. From August 1, Air India restores seven weekly flights after running five weekly through June and July, a temporary cut the airline tied to higher fuel prices and broader geopolitical operating conditions. Daily flying does not invent seats out of nowhere, but it does give families more chances to move a wedding week or school calendar by one day without losing the nonstop product.

The airplane is the other half of the booking decision. Air India’s published three-class layout on the new 787-9 is thirty Business suites, twenty-eight Premium Economy seats, and two hundred thirty-eight Economy seats. Premium Economy’s debut on Delhi–Toronto matters for a diaspora corridor where many travelers want a longer seat and a quieter cabin without buying a suite. Treat the cabin photos and seat counts as the product story; treat fares, seat maps, and door pairs as things to confirm on the ticket you actually hold.

Toronto is not a random North American spoke in this announcement. Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson called Canada home to one of the world’s largest Indian diaspora communities and named Toronto as a long-standing Air India gateway. Statistics Canada’s 2021 census put about 1.18 million South Asian visible-minority residents in the Toronto CMA, roughly nineteen percent of the region, with Indian ethnic origin alone near 578,000. For those households, three hours and a fuel stop are not abstract network language. They are whether an older relative clears immigration with energy left, and whether a student can land before a same-day connection collapses.

Use the upgrade the way you use any long-haul change: hold the aircraft and the daily timetable as the durable reasons to look, and treat the nonstop as the prize that still depends on airspace holding on your travel dates. Compare total time, cabin, bags, and change rules against other India–Canada options rather than chasing a headline fare. In the first week of August, watch whether AI187 actually operates without Vienna on the days you care about. The cabin and the calendar are already worth planning around; the shorter westbound clock is the part that still has to prove itself in the air.
