Thailand’s Lunch Plate Rose 4 Percent

The afternoon bowl is minced pork soup. The plate on the next corner is pad kra pao, holy basil stir-fried with rice.

On October 6, Nantapong Chiralerspong published September’s prices. He runs the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, the commerce ministry unit that tracks what people in Thailand pay. Lunches a shop cooks for you were up 4 percent from a year earlier. The 4 percent is nationwide. The dishes in it are noodles, rice with curry, pad kra pao, and fried rice. The same kind of plate got more expensive in Bangkok too.

Bangkok and the neighboring provinces rose 2.57 percent. Lunch is in there, and so are a motorcycle taxi and a market bag.

For dinner, look for pad kra pao, or rice with a curry poured over the top. Eat whichever the nearest stall is cooking, and read the price before you order.
