That makes July 2026 a sensible planning month, with an important qualification: no reliable evidence says it is universally the cheapest time to buy. Transpacific Lunar New Year travel combines fixed family dates, long booking horizons, uneven route capacity, and schedules that may still change. The useful work now is to establish the trip, watch the right itineraries, and recognize an acceptable option when it appears.

For families traveling around reunion dinner, Friday, February 5 is the critical arrival marker. The twelfth lunar month has 29 days in 2027, so the fifth is New Year’s Eve even though it is not a lunar “day 30.” A traveler leaving North America too late can lose another calendar day crossing the date line. Weather and missed connections add reasons to arrive with recovery time rather than treating dinner as the first appointment after landing.

Official holiday arrangements differ by destination. Hong Kong has holidays on February 6, 8, and 9, with the fourth lunar day used as a substitute because the second falls on Sunday. The annual notice will confirm the actual days off and adjusted working days.

The same caution applies to Chunyun, China’s forty-day Spring Festival travel rush. Recent official periods have followed a pattern from the fifteenth day of the twelfth lunar month through the twenty-fifth day of the first month. If that pattern holds, the 2027 period would run around January 22 through March 2. Those dates are a planning estimate until the multi-agency transport plan is published.

The scale helps explain why family schedules become difficult. China’s civil aviation system carried 94.39 million passengers during the 2026 Chunyun period, up 4.6 percent from 2025, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China. The figure covers the domestic and international system and does not measure a particular transpacific route. It does show that Lunar New Year travel pressure reaches far beyond a few full flights from California.

Several relevant booking products are already open, though they do not establish one industry-wide window. EVA Air permits retail reservations and timetable searches up to 360 days ahead. Cathay Pacific’s published terms allow its standard award seats to be booked up to 360 days before departure. Air Canada accepts qualifying group bookings up to eleven months ahead. A flight appearing today still needs its operating carrier, days of service, and fare terms checked carefully.

The route counts below describe the current 2026 market rather than guaranteeing February 2027 service. Airlines can alter frequencies, aircraft, and operating days when the winter timetable settles. Codeshares can also make a route look more competitive than it is because a flight sold under one airline’s code may be operated by another.

Route choice varies sharply by home city. San Francisco has the deepest reviewed nonstop field to Taipei, with China Airlines, EVA Air, Starlux, and United operating in the current 2026 schedule. Cathay is the nonstop operator from New York and Toronto. Guangzhou choices are much thinner from the same gateways, particularly from the United States, where mainland China passenger capacity remains well below pre-pandemic levels.

Families can compare three itinerary structures. The first is a nonstop from the home gateway. The second uses a protected connection from a nearby North American airport. The third reaches Taipei or Hong Kong on one ticket and continues to the final city. The right comparison includes total elapsed time, baggage, seat fees, airport changes, overnight hotels, and change conditions alongside fare.

One ticket is generally easier to manage when a long-haul schedule shifts or a connection is missed. Separate tickets can still work, especially when they unlock a scarce route, but the buffer should account for baggage collection, immigration, terminal or airport transfers, and the possibility that the second airline has no obligation to rebook the traveler.
