In Seoul, Lunch Is the Meal
A pork dinner for two now clears 100,000 won. In February a seat at Mingles was going to 420,000 won, and the book was already full.

A hundred thousand won for pork
If you came for Korean barbecue, start with the bill.
In June, a 200-gram serving of pork belly, samgyeopsal, averaged 21,321 won in Seoul, up from 20,447 a year earlier. The Seoul Economic Daily took the number from Chamgagyeok, the price list the Korea Consumer Agency keeps for ordinary meals. Two people, two servings each, and the meat comes to 85,284 won. Soju on a normal shopping street is about 6,000 won a bottle. Three bottles and the table is past 100,000 won, and nobody has ordered Korean beef yet. In Gangnam the paper found that bottle at 8,000 won, and in some rooms past 10,000.
The tasting menus went further. In February, Dong-a Ilbo found the expensive rooms booked solid while the prices were still rising. Mingles, Chef Kang Min-goo’s restaurant, is the only three-star kitchen in the Michelin Guide Seoul & Busan 2026, its second year with three stars. From March 1 the dinner there was going to 420,000 won, up from 400,000, and the tables were taken through April. Chef Ahn Sung-jae’s Mosu was at 420,000 won for dinner and booked through May. A seat at Mingles costs about as much as four of those pork nights.
Under 45,000 won
You can eat a full lunch in Seoul for 45,000 won. Michelin’s Bib Gourmand list is that meal, the guide’s pick for food worth what it costs. The JoongAng Daily put the cap at about $31. There are 51 of these restaurants in the city.
Four that joined this year show the kind of lunch this price still buys. Gosari Express cooks inside Jungang Market in Sindang-dong. Gosari is bracken, the fern Koreans dry and season, and the shop tosses bibim noodles in an oil made from it. The menu is plant-based. Andeok, in Jongno, serves Pyongyang-style cold noodles. Oilje, in Yongsan, simmers seaweed soup with perilla seeds and cooks the rice in a cauldron. 3rd Samgyetang, in Seocho, is a third-generation chicken-soup house that has been open since 1973. They are in different parts of the city. Pick one and you have had the meal.
The everyday bowls cost about the same. Cold noodles, naengmyeon, averaged 12,615 won in Seoul on that June list. Kalguksu, knife-cut noodle soup, was 10,038 won. Samgyetang, ginseng chicken soup, was 18,154. A famous shop charges more than the average, and you still have your afternoon.
For the market version, take Line 6 to Mangwon and use Exit 2. Mangwon Market has been a neighborhood market for more than forty years, a short walk from the station, with the river park just beyond it. Shops generally run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and a stall can close earlier. Buy something to cook later, or eat at the counter. Gwangjang is the market in the photographs. Mangwon is groceries and a hot snack, on a weekday, before anyone has started grilling.
One night at the grill
Have the grill once. Decide on pork or beef before you sit down.
Pork belly is the night that matches the June average. Hanwoo, Korean beef, has its own line on the menu because the meat costs more, and this year it costs more than it did. By late May, wholesale brisket was up 14.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation, the public agency that tracks those prices. Order it if that is the dinner you came for. Give the other nights to pork, noodles, and the market.
If you are still hungry when the grill slows, take the stew or a bowl of cold noodles. A second round of pork is how a 100,000-won table keeps growing.
If you are here next week
Taste of Seoul runs from Friday, October 23, through Thursday, October 29, at Dongdaemun Design Plaza and in restaurants around the city. On October 13 the Seoul Metropolitan Government published this year’s 100, chosen by 60 food experts in Korea. Twenty-seven of them cook Korean food. There is also, for the first time, a list of 50 cafes and dessert shops. The market at the plaza is Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 5. Some of the programs charge a fee.
Go if Dongdaemun is already your afternoon. Have the lunch you wanted either way.
A starred dinner is a booking you make before the flight. In February, Dong-a Ilbo found Mingles and Mosu full for months, and a festival week is a busy week to hope for a cancellation. October 29 ends the program. Pork belly costs the same the next morning.
