This New Banyan Resort Sits at the Base of a UNESCO Mountain

Mount Emei used to be the day you left Chengdu. You took a morning train, walked a temple, maybe rode a cable car toward the Golden Summit, and came back in time for hotpot.

Banyan Tree now wants that day to end at the mountain.

The Singapore-listed hospitality company Banyan Group said on August 3 that Banyan Tree Mount Emei was open in Emeishan, the small city at the foot of the peak in Sichuan. The resort sits next to Baoguo Temple, about a five-minute drive from Emeishan High-Speed Railway Station and, in the company's figures, about two minutes from the scenic-area gate. That is closer to sleeping at the trailhead than to a Chengdu hotel with a mountain on the itinerary.

The campus has 130 rooms and villas in six categories. Banyan says every one of them has a private outdoor hot spring pool. Mountain View Rooms, published at 75 square meters, look at the slope. Garden Villas open onto their own planted courts. One- and two-bedroom Lakeside Villas sit beside the water. The Presidential Villa is 320 square meters, with a garden of similar size and a terrace over a stream. Pay for the soak. The villa names are decoration. If you have come this far from Chengdu, you should be able to sit in hot water without a robe walk through a lobby.

Banyan calls the property the first luxury international-brand resort in Emeishan city. Treat that as the company's line. What you can check is simpler: the rooms are bookable, the rail station is close, and the mountain is the one UNESCO listed in 1996.

UNESCO applied that listing to the Mount Emei Scenic Area, including the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area, as a mixed cultural and natural site. The mountain is one of China's four sacred Buddhist peaks. The first Buddhist temple on Chinese territory was built on the summit in the first century, UNESCO says. Baoguo Temple, next to the resort, dates to the early 1600s. The 71-meter Leshan Buddha, looking over the meeting of three rivers, is about twenty minutes away by high-speed train. The resort sits beside the entrance. That is what you are buying.

Pack the days around that entrance. One afternoon can hold Baoguo and the lower trails. A Golden Summit day is a different job: cable cars and a long vertical. Check the scenic area's own booking channel before you lock the second night. The pool makes the second night feel like a stay. The mountain is still the first day's work.

The buildings follow the valley more than a tower. Interiors are by Hong Kong's Cheng Chung Design. The company says seven century-old camphor trees, and every tree thicker than ten centimeters, stayed where they were. Arrival is framed as a courtyard that channels rain inward, a western-Sichuan reading of si shui gui tang, four waters returning to the hall. Set apart from the main buildings, a Study Room by the Chinese architect Zhuang Ziyu takes its name from Huizong Hall, Baoguo's older name, and holds tea and private dinners. Jiayao cooks Sichuan and Cantonese food. You can skip the workshop list and still have a reason to be here: the soak and a temple next door.

The transfer is the booking question.

Chengdu East to Emeishan High-Speed Railway Station can run just under an hour on the faster trains, and a bit over an hour on many others. Leshan, for the Buddha, is the stop before. From the Emeishan platform, the resort is a short car ride, not a second expedition. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is about two hours by car in Banyan's figures; Chengdu Tianfu is about two hours and fifteen minutes. If you land at Shuangliu, direct trains from the airport station to Emeishan run about an hour. That is usually the calmer door.

Leshan Airport is the line that keeps getting written as if it were already useful. Leshan's transport bureau, answering a public query on September 21, said the airport was still in pre-opening work and was expected to start flights in the second half of 2026, with first routes aimed at Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Banyan puts the future drive at about forty minutes. Until a timetable is published and flying, plan on Chengdu.

Then there is the visa. Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Britain, Canada, and much of Europe can enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days under the current unilateral policy, which China's foreign ministry has listed through the end of 2026. The United States is not on that list. American passports still need a tourist visa for an ordinary Sichuan trip, or the 240-hour visa-free transit if they are genuinely continuing to a third country or region. Chengdu Shuangliu and Tianfu are listed ports. Sichuan's permitted stay area includes Leshan, and Emeishan City sits inside that municipality. Confirm the stay area and the onward ticket before you buy nonrefundable nights.

Rates move. Late-September booking sites have been quoting a mountain-view room in the mid-hundreds of dollars a night, before breakfast, which those listings put around 218 yuan for an adult, roughly thirty dollars. Check the live total on the dates you actually hold. A new Banyan at a famous gate will not stay cheap because it is new.

Book it if you already wanted the mountain, and you would rather sleep beside Baoguo than commute from a Chengdu hotel. Give it two nights: one for the lower temples and the soak, one for a summit or Leshan day that does not start at dawn from the provincial capital. Skip it if Chengdu is the trip. Pandas and a night in the city do not need this transfer.

The mountain has been open for a very long time. The new thing is a hotel at the gate that lets you get off the train and stay. Take the train from Chengdu. Do not wait for the airport.
