History & lore

Toronto Pearson began as Malton Airport northwest of the city; the first scheduled passenger landing is usually dated 29 August 1939, when a Trans-Canada Air Lines DC-3 arrived on what had been farmland. During the Second World War it hosted RCAF Station Malton under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The airport was renamed for Lester B. Pearson—Toronto-born prime minister and 1957 Nobel Peace Prize laureate—on 2 January 1984. The IATA code YYZ comes from the old telegraph code for the Malton railway station, not from the letters in “Toronto.”

YYZ is the eastern Canada connection that rewards people who treat Union Station as the product and punish people who try to stack Scarborough, Markham, and the CN Tower into one bank. The UP Express sits in Terminal 1 beside the free Terminal Link and can put you downtown in about twenty-five to twenty-eight minutes—if you clear Canada Border Services Agency with the right documents and protect the walk back through security, especially for a U.S. preclearance departure.

Under three hours, stay airside. Three to six hours is a lounge or GoodLife shower, or a Sheraton day room at Terminal 3. Five to seven hours can mean St. Lawrence Market or one intentional stop near Union if entry rules cooperate. An overnight is the Sheraton walkway, ALT via Viscount, or a downtown night—not a multi-borough food crawl. This guide is Pearson only; Billy Bishop (YTZ) is a different airport downtown.

City access: Union Pearson Express from Pearson Station in Terminal 1 (next to the Terminal Link) to Union Station: about 25–28 minutes, typically every 15 minutes. The Long Layover Return is often CAD $12.35 for adults and $25.70 for a family fare, online only, valid from Pearson Station, and expires within seven hours of your trip start time—useful when the connection math is tight. Children 12 and under ride free. Weekday Pearson→Union service often runs roughly 05:27–00:57; weekend first trains start later—confirm live boards. From Terminal 3, take the free Terminal Link to Terminal 1 first. Taxi and rideshare pickups are on arrivals levels; GO Transit and TTC are slower backups when UP Express has finished.
Longest trek: Terminals 1 and 3 are separate buildings linked by the free Terminal Link train—travel between stations is often about two to eight minutes, with service typically 24 hours (overnight maintenance sometimes substitutes shuttle buses; follow on-site signs). Terminal 1 runs Domestic (D), International (E), and U.S. Transborder (F) with CBP preclearance. Terminal 3 runs U.S. Concourse A plus Domestic/International B–C. Budget 15–30+ minutes door-to-door across terminals including Link waits and pier walks. International and U.S. arrivals generally clear CBSA and then re-clear security for the next departure. The Infield Concourse, when active, is a bus extension of Terminal 3—not a walking transfer.
Airside hotel: YYZ does not run a sterile Miracle-style airside hotel. Sheraton Gateway Hotel connects to Terminal 3 by a climate-controlled walkway—landside after you clear entry. Day-use guestroom and Club Lounge day passes are sometimes offered; confirm availability at the property rather than assuming an online rate. ALT Hotel Toronto Pearson sits at Viscount Station via the free Terminal Link. Nearby Mississauga airport hotels with shuttles cover more inventory. Clear CBSA if you arrive from overseas before any hotel check-in.

Stay airside. Lounge shower if you qualify, confirm Terminal 1 vs 3 and any U.S. preclearance pier. Do not clear CBSA for a city errand.

Lounge showers, GoodLife if you are already landside, Terminal Link wayfinding, and terminal food cover most short and mid connections without a downtown commitment. Treat rest as a legitimate YYZ product—especially overnight banks and U.S. preclearance days that already consume queue time.

Leave the airport

Exit only with documents ready (eTA or exemption confirmed), luggage sorted, and a simple target—UP Express to Union plus one intentional meal or short walk. Use the Long Layover Return when the seven-hour window fits. Protect return through security and any U.S. preclearance. If UP Express has finished for the night, use taxi/rideshare or stay at an airport hotel instead of inventing a Scarborough loop.

Showers & naps

There is no free public shower hall. GoodLife Fitness in Terminal 1 landside Arrivals (often signed near Area F) sells day passes typically around CAD $25 with locker rooms, showers, and towel service—hours commonly Monday–Friday about 06:00–20:00 and weekends about 08:00–18:00; confirm on the day. Expect paid showers in Plaza Premium and Air Canada Maple Leaf lounges across Terminal 1 sectors and in select Terminal 3 lounges; Wellbeing Spa near Terminal 3 Gate A10 has been reported for paid standalone showers. Landside rest includes Lounge 15 / Area 15 seating on Terminal 1 Departures. Overnight sleepers already past security use airside seating when open; new airside access often closes overnight and reopens around 04:30.

Both terminals carry solid Canadian and international options; some landside chains help late banks—confirm maps. If your next flight is to the United States, budget CBP preclearance separately from UP Express math. Free Wi-Fi is typically “Toronto Pearson Public Wi-Fi.” Protect return time for Terminal Link hops and any T1↔T3 airline change.

Entry & transit rules

Leaving the terminal means entering Canada. Visa-exempt foreign nationals generally need an electronic travel authorization (eTA, CAD $7) to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport—apply at canada.ca before you travel. United States citizens are eTA-exempt with a valid U.S. passport; U.S. lawful permanent residents are also eTA-exempt when they carry a valid green card (or equivalent) plus their passport. Canadian citizens need a valid Canadian passport, not an eTA. Some visa-required nationalities may qualify for Transit Without Visa or the China Transit Program only while remaining in the sterile transit area—city exits usually need a visitor or transit visa.
