San Francisco International (SFO)
The Bay Area’s strongest short-exit hub—free 24-hour AirTrain, BART about thirty minutes downtown, Grand Hyatt on the train, and paid Freshen Up showers landside.
History & lore
SFO began as Mills Field Municipal Airport on a leased cow pasture, dedicated 7 May 1927—weeks before Lindbergh’s Atlantic crossing. It became San Francisco Airport in 1931 and added International after World War II. The Dianne Feinstein International Terminal opened 10 December 2000 and remains the largest international terminal in North America; it sits on base isolators for earthquakes.
SFO sits about thirteen miles south of downtown, with a BART station in the International Terminal and a free AirTrain looping the campus. That combination tempts people into Golden Gate math they cannot finish. International arrivals clear CBP, exit landside, then re-clear TSA. Domestic terminal changes can often stay post-security on walkways—or ride AirTrain when walking is slower.
Under three hours, stay airside. Three to six hours is a meal, a yoga room if open, Freshen Up if you exit, or a lounge shower if you qualify. Five to seven hours can mean BART to Powell or Embarcadero for one meal—if Sunday morning schedules and CBP still leave a buffer. An overnight is the Grand Hyatt on AirTrain or a nearby shuttle hotel, not a sterile capsule. This guide is SFO only—not OAK or SJC.
Layover snapshot
- Leave the airport?
- About 5–7 hours after an international arrival for a first-timer downtown meal via BART. Soft-claim CBP, AirTrain if needed, BART both ways (~30 minutes each), one focused stop, and a wide return through TSA. Soft-claim 6–8 hours on a first SFO visit or when Sunday BART starts late (~8 a.m. from SFO). Under five hours, stay airside—or use Freshen Up / Grand Hyatt day use without inventing the bridge.
- City access
- BART from the International Terminal departures level (Boarding Area G side; also Garage G via AirTrain) soft-claims about 30 minutes to downtown stations—Powell, Montgomery, Civic Center, Embarcadero. Soft-claim one-way adult fare about $11.80 SFO to Powell (BART fare API, July 2026)—confirm the official calculator. Pay with contactless bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Clipper; paper tickets are gone. Soft-claim weekday service from SFO roughly 4:58 a.m. to midnight; Saturday later; Sunday first train soft-claims ~8:08 a.m. Caltrain via BART to Millbrae. Soft-claim rideshare or taxi 25–50+ minutes and $35–70+ to Union Square in traffic.
- Longest trek
- Free AirTrain runs 24 hours—Red Line clockwise ~9 minutes around terminals, garages, BART, and Grand Hyatt; Blue Line counterclockwise ~25 minutes including Rental Car Center and Long-Term Parking. Soft-claim Terminal 3’s dedicated AirTrain station closed until a new facility opens around 2027—United and T3 riders use the combined Terminals 2 & 3 station. Soft-claim overnight maintenance 11 p.m.–5 a.m. can stretch waits. Official walkways connect terminals pre- and post-security; soft-claim walk International↔Terminal 1 B or International↔Terminal 3, and prefer AirTrain for International↔Terminal 2. International CBP exits the sterile area—budget re-TSA for the next flight.
- Airside hotel
- There is no sterile airside transit hotel. Grand Hyatt at SFO is on-airport via AirTrain (soft-claim 351 rooms)—you leave security to reach it. Soft-claim day-use and overnight rates; airport-area shuttle hotels are Plan B. Freshen Up nap rooms in the International Terminal Main Hall are landside paid rooms, not a hotel product.
By hours available
Under 3 hours
Stay airside in your arrival zone. Eat once, confirm the next boarding area, and do not clear CBP for a skyline photo. Build AirTrain or walk time if you already change terminals.
3–6 hours
Terminal meal, yoga room if open, or lounge shower if you qualify. Freshen Up or Grand Hyatt only if you already know the re-TSA path. Leave for downtown only with a wide buffer—seven hours is safer after an international arrival.
6–12 hours
BART to Powell, Montgomery, or Embarcadero for one meal or short walk. Skip Golden Gate plus Alcatraz plus wine country. Return with serious TSA and AirTrain buffer—especially if Terminal 3 AirTrain routing is diverted.
Overnight / micro-trip
Grand Hyatt via AirTrain, or a nearby shuttle hotel, then one focused morning neighborhood—or stay airside only if you accept seating sleep. Treat day two as a short SF bite, not a recovery scramble across A, G, and F.
Stay airside
Lounge access, terminal dining, yoga rooms, and post-security walks cover most short and mid connections without leaving. Treat rest as seating and lounges—or exit for Freshen Up / Grand Hyatt if you accept re-screening. Confirm Boarding Area A vs G vs domestic letters before you wander.
Leave the airport
Exit only with documents ready, luggage sorted, and a simple target—BART to Powell or Embarcadero plus one meal. Protect return through TSA and AirTrain if your gate is far. If BART has ended for the night or Sunday starts late, stay airside or use Grand Hyatt instead of inventing a rideshare tour of the bridge.
Showers & naps
Freshen Up! sits pre-security in the Dianne Feinstein International Terminal Main Hall near the G-gates entrance—soft-claim paid showers 24 hours (~$30 deluxe / 30 minutes) plus timed nap rooms (day rates from soft-claim ~$150+; overnight options)—confirm current prices at flysfo.com/freshen. Soft-claim lounge showers when eligible (United Polaris near G; Admirals Club and The Club SFO in Terminal 1; others by ticket). Soft-claim free yoga rooms in Terminals 1–3 during daytime hours. Overnight airside means seating and announcements—bring earplugs.
Dining
Terminal dining covers short and mid connections; overnight options thin to snacks and vending. On a city exit, one meal near Powell / Ferry Building / Chinatown beats stacking Golden Gate, Alcatraz, and Napa into the same bank. See the San Francisco destination guide and diaspora weekend piece when you have real nights in the city.
Transit logistics
International-to-anything usually means CBP first. Store luggage at Airport Travel Agency / Freshen Up area soft-claim hours if you leave. Tap the same contactless card in and out on BART. Protect Sunday morning and late-night gaps—BART is not 24 hours. Soft-claim AirTrain luggage carts allowed with brakes set; no eating or drinking on the train. Confirm Terminal 2 & 3 AirTrain naming while T3 station work continues.
Entry & transit rules
Entering the United States—even on a layover—generally requires a valid passport plus ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa for most foreign nationals; US citizens and lawful permanent residents use their usual documents. Rules are passport-specific and changeable; confirm CBP and Travel.State.gov. Soft-claim: once you clear CBP you have entered the US for immigration purposes. Never invent nationality lists.
Hacks & hidden gems
BART beats traffic—confirm the fare calculator
Soft-claim ~30 minutes and about $11.80 to Powell. Contactless tap works; Clipper if you also need Muni. Sunday mornings start late from SFO.
AirTrain is free; Terminal 3 station is not normal yet
Use the combined Terminals 2 & 3 stop until the new T3 facility opens (~2027). Blue Line for rental cars; Red for the short terminal loop.
Freshen Up is landside—budget re-screening
Paid showers and nap rooms near International G. Grand Hyatt is on AirTrain but also outside sterile areas.
Yoga rooms are the free calm corner
Soft-claim rooms in Terminals 1–3 beat wandering for a quiet gate when you stay airside. Polaris and select clubs add showers when you qualify.
