History & lore

Vancouver International Airport opened on 22 July 1931 on Sea Island in Richmond—about twelve kilometres from downtown—and grew from a wartime RCAF field into Canada’s main transpacific hub. The modern Main Terminal stitches Domestic, International, and U.S. preclearance piers into one building; the Canada Line station opened with the line in 2009. Bill Reid’s bronze Spirit of Haida Gwaii (The Jade Canoe) and Vancouver Aquarium marine tanks in the international area are the landmarks people remember when the connection goes well. YVR is the Pacific connection that makes a North American layover feel almost Asian-hub useful: the Canada Line sits between the Domestic and International halls and can put you at Waterfront Station in about twenty-six minutes. That only helps if you clear Canada Border Services Agency with the right documents, budget the YVR AddFare, and protect the walk back through security—especially if your next gate is Pier E U.S. preclearance.

Under three hours, stay airside. Three to six hours is a lounge shower, the Quiet Zone near D67, or a Fairmont day room. Five to seven hours can mean Gastown and one meal if entry rules cooperate. An overnight is the in-terminal Fairmont or a downtown Canada Line night—not a Capilano-and-seawall checklist. This guide is the Main Terminal; the South Terminal for floatplanes and some regional flights is a free shuttle away.

Leave the airport?: About 5–6 hours for a first-timer meal in Gastown via Canada Line. CBSA if you arrive internationally, the walk to the station, about 26 minutes each way to Waterfront, one sit-down stop, and a wide return through security—longer if your departure is U.S. preclearance on Pier E. Lean toward six to seven hours on a first Canada entry or at peak arrival banks. Under five hours, stay airside unless you already know YVR.
City access: Canada Line SkyTrain from YVR–Airport station (between Domestic and International in the Main Terminal) to Waterfront Station: about 26 minutes. Adult fares are the regular zone fare plus a YVR Airport AddFare when you leave Sea Island toward Bridgeport and beyond—AddFare often CAD $6.50 as of 1 July 2026 (confirm TransLink). Rough total to downtown often about CAD $10–12 one way depending on peak vs off-peak zones and contactless vs Compass Stored Value. Pay by contactless card, Compass Card, or ticket machines. Service roughly early morning into about 1 a.m.—TransLink often cites YVR→Waterfront roughly 05:09–00:54; confirm live boards. When SkyTrain is closed, N10 NightBus covers downtown/Richmond. Taxi and rideshare pickups are on arrivals levels; Richmond hotels often run free shuttles.
Longest trek: The Main Terminal is one interconnected building: Domestic piers A–C, International Pier D, and U.S. Transborder Pier E with CBP preclearance. Expect 10–25+ minutes walking between far gates depending on pier letters—wear walking shoes and confirm swing-gate letters (some C/D/E gates rebadge). International and U.S. arrivals generally clear CBSA and then re-clear security for the next departure; do not invent a sterile walk from an overseas arrival to a domestic gate. The South Terminal (Airport South) for floatplanes and some coastal/regional flights is not a walking transfer—use the free inter-terminal shuttle.
Airside hotel: YVR does not run a sterile Miracle-style airside hotel. Fairmont Vancouver Airport sits inside the Main Terminal above U.S. Departures—landside, typically a five-to-ten-minute walk from Domestic or International halls. Day-use rooms for 4, 6, or 8 hours between about 08:00 and 19:00 Pacific must be booked by phone (1-866-540-4441); they are not sold online. Overnight Fairmont stays and nearby Richmond airport hotels with shuttles cover real sleep after you clear entry.

Stay airside. Lounge shower if you qualify, walk the international art and aquarium exhibits, confirm Domestic vs D vs E pier. Do not clear CBSA for a city errand.
3–6 hours
Plaza Premium or Maple Leaf shower, Quiet Zone near D67, or Fairmont day room by phone. Leave for Gastown only if documents are ready and you still keep a wide buffer—six hours is safer after an international arrival.
6–12 hours
Canada Line to Waterfront and one intentional Gastown meal or short seawall edge—or Richmond food if that is the point. Skip Capilano and multi-neighborhood crawls. Return with serious security and preclearance buffer if flying to the U.S.
Overnight / micro-trip
Fairmont inside the terminal, a Richmond shuttle hotel, or a downtown night near the Canada Line. Treat day two as one Vancouver bite, not a recovery scramble across Pier E.

Stay airside

Lounge showers, the D67 Quiet Zone, aquarium tanks, the Jade Canoe, and terminal food cover most short and mid connections without CBSA. Treat rest as a legitimate YVR product—especially overnight banks and Pier E preclearance days that already consume queue time.

Leave the airport

Exit only with documents ready (eTA or exemption confirmed), luggage sorted, and a simple target—Canada Line to Waterfront plus Gastown food or a short waterfront walk. Protect return through security and any U.S. preclearance. If SkyTrain has finished for the night, use NightBus, taxi, or stay airside instead of inventing a Capilano loop.

Showers & naps

There is no free public shower hall. Expect paid showers in Plaza Premium lounges (Domestic near Gate B15; International near D67/D68, including Plaza Premium First; U.S. Pier E near E87/E88) and in eligible Air Canada Maple Leaf, Cathay Pacific, and SkyTeam lounges—fees and hours vary; confirm on the day. Fairmont’s health club has been reported as a landside shower option for a day fee—confirm current access. International Departures has a Quiet Zone near Gate D67 with calmer seating. Overnight sleepers use airside seating in International when already past security; new airside access often closes overnight and reopens around 04:30.

Dining

Domestic and International areas carry solid Pacific Northwest and Asian options; some late-night chains and cafés help overnight banks—confirm maps. On a city exit, one intentional meal in Gastown from Waterfront, or a Richmond food stop if that is your layover thesis, beats stacking Stanley Park, Capilano, and Granville Island into the same connection. Transit logistics

Store luggage at CDS Baggage Services landside if you leave (fee; daytime hours—confirm). The YVR AddFare applies when leaving the airport stations toward the city—not when arriving to YVR. If your next flight is to the United States, budget Pier E preclearance time separately from Canada Line math. Green-vest ambassadors and blue-vest staff help with wayfinding. Entry & transit rules

Leaving the terminal means entering Canada. Visa-exempt foreign nationals generally need an electronic travel authorization (eTA, CAD $7) to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport—apply at canada.ca before you travel. United States citizens are eTA-exempt with a valid U.S. passport; U.S. lawful permanent residents are also eTA-exempt when they carry a valid green card (or equivalent) plus their passport. Canadian citizens need a valid Canadian passport, not an eTA. Some visa-required nationalities may qualify for Transit Without Visa or the China Transit Program only while remaining in the sterile transit area—city exits usually need a visitor or transit visa. Budget the YVR AddFare outbound
Leaving YVR, Sea Island Centre, or Templeton toward the city typically adds about CAD $6.50 (as of July 2026) on top of the zone fare. Trips arriving to the airport do not pay it. Confirm TransLink before you tap.

International Departures airside has a signed Quiet Zone with calmer seating. Pair it with a Plaza Premium shower in the same pier when you need a reset without downtown.
eTA before you fly if you need one
Visa-exempt travelers generally need the CAD $7 eTA to board toward Canada—even for a short layover exit. U.S. citizens use a passport only; dual Canadian citizens need a Canadian passport.
