Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL)

Australia’s second-busiest hub and a true 24-hour gateway—SkyBus to Southern Cross in about twenty to thirty minutes, free Terminal 2 showers if you bring a towel, PARKROYAL on a skybridge, and the same visa check that decides whether the CBD is even legal.

History & lore

Melbourne Airport opened on 1 July 1970 at Tullamarine—about twenty-two kilometres northwest of the CBD—when Prime Minister John Gorton moved international flying off Essendon’s short jet-era runways. Locals still call it Tulla, from the indigenous name Tullamareena. Unlike Sydney, it was built to run without a night curfew, which is why it remains Australia’s busiest true 24-hour major airport.

MEL is the Australia connection that rewards people who want coffee culture over harbor icons—and punishes people who treat a five-hour bank like Changi. SkyBus can put you at Southern Cross Station in about twenty to thirty minutes, but only if you clear Australian immigration with the right documents, budget traffic on the Tullamarine Freeway, and protect the walk back through security.

Under three hours, stay airside in Terminal 2. Three to six hours is a free shower, a lounge, or a PARKROYAL day room if you already hold entry authority. Six to eight hours can mean one intentional CBD coffee or laneway bite. An overnight is the skybridge hotel or a precinct walk—not a Great Ocean Road fantasy. This guide is Tullamarine only; Avalon (AVV) is a different airport.

Layover snapshot

Leave the airport?
About 6–7 hours for a first-timer meal or serious coffee stop near Southern Cross via SkyBus after an international arrival. Immigration, the walk to the SkyBus stop, about 20–30 minutes each way (longer in peak traffic), one intentional stop, and a wide return through security. Lean toward seven to eight hours on a first Australia entry or when you must rebuild a domestic departure afterward. Under six hours, stay on the airport campus unless you already hold a visa and know MEL cold.
City access
SkyBus Melbourne City Express runs from kerbside stops at Terminals 1, 3, and 4 to Southern Cross Station in the CBD: typically about 20–30 minutes, every 10 minutes in peak (roughly 7 a.m.–7 p.m.) and every 15 minutes off-peak, from about 4 a.m. to 1 a.m.—no service between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Adult fares are often about AUD $25.90 one way or $43.40 return; confirm skybus.com.au. Buy online, at e-kiosks, or at Smart Carte / Prosegur in Terminal 2 Arrivals. Terminal 2 passengers walk to a T1/T3/T4 stop. Taxi and rideshare pickups are on the forecourt; Public Transport Victoria buses leave from the Terminal 4 Ground Transport Hub and are cheaper but slower. There is no airport rail link open yet—do not invent a train.
Longest trek
Melbourne’s four terminals sit in one consolidated precinct under a single roof: Terminal 2 (international) in the centre, Terminal 1 (Qantas domestic) and Terminal 3 (Virgin Australia) on either side, and Terminal 4 (Jetstar and other domestic) about 100 metres south of T3. Expect roughly 5–15+ minutes walking between far gates depending on ends—no inter-terminal people-mover. International-to-domestic connections must collect bags and clear customs and immigration before walking to T1, T3, or T4—budget a visa and queue time. Pure international-to-international connections may stay in the T2 transit lounge when the airline and Home Affairs TWOV rules cooperate.
Airside hotel
MEL does not run a sterile Miracle-style airside hotel. PARKROYAL Melbourne Airport connects to the terminals by covered skybridge—landside after you clear entry. Short-stay day-use blocks (often about 3, 5, or 8 hours) are part of the product; confirm live rates and pool/spa hours. Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport sits about 400 metres away with day-use windows; Novotel and ibis properties are short walks near Terminal 4. Do not book PARKROYAL on the assumption that Transit Without Visa alone gets you a bed.

By hours available

  • Under 3 hours

Stay airside in Terminal 2. Free shower if the queue is short, eat once, confirm your pier. Do not clear immigration for a CBD coffee.

  • 3–6 hours

Shower plus lounge, or PARKROYAL day room if you already hold entry authority. Leave for Southern Cross only if documents are ready and you still keep a wide buffer—seven hours is safer for first-timers after immigration.

  • 6–12 hours

With entry authority: SkyBus to Southern Cross and one intentional CBD coffee, laneway bite, or market stop. Skip the Great Ocean Road and multi-neighborhood crawls. Return early for traffic, security, and any domestic hop.

  • Overnight / micro-trip

PARKROYAL via skybridge, Holiday Inn or Novotel on the precinct, or a simple CBD night near Southern Cross. Treat day two as one Melbourne bite, not a recovery scramble across T1–T4.

Stay airside

Free T2 showers, lounges, and terminal food cover most short and mid international connections without clearing immigration. Treat rest as a lounge or seating problem—and treat overnight banks as a hotel problem when security closes for new airside entries.

Leave the airport

Exit only with confirmed Australian entry authority, luggage sorted, and a simple target—SkyBus to Southern Cross plus one intentional coffee or meal. Budget freeway traffic both ways. Protect return through security and any domestic-terminal rebuild. If SkyBus has finished for the night, use a taxi or stay at PARKROYAL instead of inventing a Great Ocean Road loop.

Showers & naps

Expect free public showers in Terminal 2—Melbourne Airport’s own guidance commonly cites a landside location near Grill’d and an airside location near Lotte Duty Free; traveler maps also mention landside near Nando’s and airside past duty free. Bring your own towel and toiletries; there is typically no towel rental. Paid showers sit in Plaza Premium, Marhaba, The House, and eligible airline lounges. Overnight sleepers use landside seating when already cleared; new airside access often closes overnight by terminal (commonly cited roughly 1 a.m.–4 a.m.) and reopens with the morning bank—use a hotel for real sleep.

Dining

Terminal 2 and the domestic halls carry solid Australian and international options during daytime banks; overnight choices thin out, with a few landside chains often cited as 24-hour. On a city exit, one intentional stop from Southern Cross—CBD coffee, a laneway bite, or Queen Victoria Market if timing and energy cooperate—beats stacking the Great Ocean Road, St Kilda, and a museum circuit into the same connection. See the Melbourne destination guide when you have real nights in the city.

Transit logistics

Store luggage at SmarteCarte between Terminals 2 and 3 if you leave (daytime hours—confirm). SkyBus does not run 1–4 a.m.—use a taxi, rideshare, or stay at PARKROYAL. If your next flight is domestic, treat immigration, bag reclaim, and the terminal walk as their own connection. Free Wi-Fi is typically “Airport Free Wi-Fi” in T2–T4 (registration) and Qantas Wi-Fi in T1. Protect return time for freeway traffic and security.

Entry & transit rules

Staying in the international transit lounge under Transit Without Visa (TWOV) is possible for eligible nationalities—including many US and Canadian passport holders—only if you arrive by air, hold a confirmed ticket to leave Australia for a third country within eight hours, and do not clear immigration or leave the transit lounge. Melbourne has transit-lounge facilities for eligible international-to-international connections, but international-to-domestic always requires clearing immigration and customs. Leaving for Southern Cross, PARKROYAL, or a precinct hotel generally needs a Transit visa (subclass 771), an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) for ETA-eligible passports, an eVisitor, or another visitor visa—confirm immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before you fly. TWOV is not a city-exit product. Never invent nationality lists.

Hacks & hidden gems

  • Bring a towel for the free T2 showers

Official guidance points to landside near Grill’d and airside near Lotte Duty Free. There is typically no towel rental—lounges are the paid backup when queues or supplies fail.

  • SkyBus does not stop at a dedicated T2 bay

City Express loads at Terminals 1, 3, and 4. From international arrivals, follow signs and walk to the nearest stop—budget that stroll into every downtown exit.

  • PARKROYAL is landside—TWOV will not get you in

The skybridge hotel sits after immigration. Hold a Transit 771, ETA 601, or other entry authority before you count on a day room or overnight bed.

  • International-to-domestic always clears immigration

Melbourne Airport and Qantas both treat bag reclaim and border clearance as mandatory before the walk to T1, T3, or T4. Build visa readiness into every such connection.
