JAL’s $1,100 West Coast Fare Starts in Tokyo

Through October 18, Japan Airlines lists round trips from Tokyo to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and six other cities from ¥175,000. Fuel is in the number. A no-change rule, Haneda surcharges, and a February 28 cutoff are not.

TRAICY, the Japanese travel trade site, led this morning with Taipei at ¥50,000 and Honolulu at ¥117,800. Both numbers are on Japan Airlines’ international airfare time sale, which runs through Sunday, October 18. If you are in North America trying to fly to Japan, those tickets start on the wrong side of the ocean.

This sale is a round trip that begins in Japan. Fuel surcharge on the JAL international sectors is already inside the published yen for tickets bought in September or October. Aviation insurance fees and passenger facility charges are extra. Seats at each fare are limited, and if JAL revises the price later, it will not refund the difference or bill you more on a ticket you have already paid.

The ticket to read is the one that leaves Tokyo and returns there.

The West Coast number

From Tokyo, JAL lists economy round trips to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego, Vancouver, and Phoenix from ¥175,000, the same price as New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas. With the yen near 158 to the dollar on Thursday morning, that is about $1,100 before the taxes left off the headline. A second price on the same screen is ¥191,000. TRAICY treats that gap as the add-on when you leave from another city in Japan. On the Honolulu fare, Osaka and Nagoya match Tokyo. On this one, read the city line before you assume they do.

You only get this price if the trip starts by February 28, 2027. On the sale page the economy fare is called Special Saver Q-SN. An April cherry-blossom ticket is a different product. You need at least three days away, and you can stay up to twelve months. Las Vegas and Phoenix are connections at this price. JAL says another airline flies the hop after Japan.

TRAICY’s board puts premium economy on that city list from ¥290,000, a bit over $1,800, and business from ¥560,000, about $3,500. Those cabins have their own change and refund lines. Open the one you mean to buy.

What checkout adds

Pay for the Tokyo economy fare within three days of booking, and no later than October 18 or your first international flight, whichever arrives sooner. After you pay, you cannot change the reservation, and you cannot get the money back before you fly. The ticket earns 30 percent of the miles in booking class Q, a thin credit if you were counting on this trip to refill an account.

Haneda is where the number moves. JAL adds ¥10,000 each way, about $63, on Haneda flights JL001 through JL006, JL009 through JL012, and JL015 and JL016. A round trip on those flights is ¥20,000 above the advertised fare, before airport charges. A Narita departure on a JAL aircraft, or a JL flight number operated by American Airlines, stays on the base fare. Haneda is the shorter ride into the city. Price that convenience before you take it.

Dallas, Miami, Austin, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Orlando start at ¥185,000 from Tokyo. Boston starts at ¥195,000.

Honolulu and Taipei are different tickets

The ¥117,800 Honolulu fare, about $745 from Tokyo, Osaka, or Nagoya, is the one TRAICY put in the headline, and it is a tighter ticket than the North America fare. Travel has to start between November 1 and July 31, 2027. You can stay fourteen days at most. A date change costs a fee. You cannot get the money back before you fly. Payment is due within a day, and still no later than October 18.

Some weeks are simply off this fare. Leaving Japan, that includes November 16–21, December 8–12, Christmas through New Year’s Eve, and April 24 through May 3, plus shorter blocks in February and March. Dates that stay on sale can still jump. December 23 and 24 out of Japan add ¥30,000 each way. Coming back from Honolulu between August 9 and 14 adds ¥50,000 each way, a large bite out of a ¥117,800 ticket. Haneda’s JL71 and JL72 add ¥3,500 one way. JL73 and JL74 add ¥5,000.

Taipei at ¥50,000, about $320 from Tokyo, is narrower again. JAL limits that economy fare to JL8663 and JL8664 from Narita, and JL8670 and JL8671 from Nagoya. The Haneda–Taipei flights most people picture are priced separately. Nagoya on this fare is ¥56,000. Other Japanese cities are listed at ¥72,000. TRAICY’s note that every other city simply costs ¥16,000 more does not match this rule.

Buy it if Japan is already the start

Buy it if you are already in Japan, wrapping up a long stay, or can honestly start the ticket there before February 28 and live without changes. Search jal.co.jp from the city you will leave, open the fare rule for that cabin, and check the flight number against the Haneda list before you treat ¥175,000 as your price.

If your trip starts in the United States or Canada, this sale does not cover it. Look at fares that depart from there. The window closes October 18. After that, the yen figure is a screenshot.
