Japan's Cruise Trains Are the Luxury Stay You Have to Win

A luxury night in Japan usually means a hotel confirmation. This one does not.

West Japan Railway Company, the JR operator for western Honshu, is selling Twilight Express Mizukaze for March through June 2027. Applications opened September 1 and close October 30. Each departure is capped at 34 guests. On recent sales, when the form fills, JR West draws names. That is the booking. There is no "just call the concierge" version.

Mizukaze is a ten-car cruise train that has run since 2017, named for the old Twilight Express sleeper that retired in 2015. JR West's own line is that a hotel is running through a beautiful Japan. In practice you sleep on board, eat on board, get off once a day for a planned stop, then get back on. Kyoto and Shimonoseki are the usual ends of the line.

The cabins have names you will see on the form. Royal Twin is the ordinary expensive room, for two. Royal Single is the solo cabin. The Suite takes a whole car. The last published one-night table, for last summer's departures, put a Royal Single in the mid-300,000s of yen, roughly $2,400, and The Suite around 850,000. Busy-season notices have run higher. Check the current pamphlet before you transfer yen. The figure moves with the course and the season.

What changed this year is the map. In spring 2026, JR West replaced the old Sanyo one-night courses with a Lake Biwa loop that still finishes along the Seto Inland Sea. Down from Kyoto, the first stop is Nagahama, on the north shore, for temples in a district locals call Kannon no Sato. Up from Shimonoseki, the second day gets off at Omihachiman for the house of William Merrell Vories, the American-born architect who settled in Shiga. The two-night loop still covers San'in and Setouchi. If you have already done Kyoto and Hiroshima by hotel, this is how the same geography gets slower.

The desk is Japanese. Apply on the official Mizukaze site, twilightexpress-mizukaze.jp, or by the mail-in form in the pamphlet. The tour desk sits at Nippon Travel Agency, which sells the official package, on 0570-00-3250. That is a domestic Navi Dial and often fails from abroad. On recent periods the draw has not been first-come. Some Suite dates have been held for overseas agents; treat that as a side door, not a promise. A Japan-based friend or a specialist agency is the practical path if your Japanese stops at the station ticket machine.

Meals, the stop, and the cabin are the product. Weather and equipment still cancel departures. JR West took a June 27 Lake Biwa trip out for a typhoon this year, and a July 11 San'in trip out for a plumbing failure. Buy travel insurance that understands a lottery win can still become a phone call.

Two other trains sit in the same category, with different calendars.

JR East's Train Suite Shiki-shima leaves from Ueno and works eastern Japan. Applications for April through June 2027 ran July 24 to September 14. That window is closed. Results are due in mid-October. A one-night suite with two sharing was published from 500,000 yen a person. The maisonette, taken alone on the longer course, was listed above two million. If you already applied, wait for the letter. If you did not, the live door this month is Mizukaze.

JR Kyushu's Seven Stars in Kyushu is the third name people mean when they say cruise train. The company's English page says the next official desk window, for spring and summer 2027, is scheduled for October. Watch that site. Do not apply to the wrong railway.

Book this if you already like Japan at walking speed and you can stand spending hotel money on a cabin you might not get. Two people in a Royal Twin is the sane first try. The Suite is a different budget. Skip it if this would be your first week in the country. Kyoto still has to come first, on the ground, before it comes past the window.

October 30 is a Friday. The form is open now. The train does not hold a cabin for people who meant to look it up later.
