Seoul Lantern Festival 2026

Seoul · Dec 11–Jan 31, 2027 · ICN / GMP

Culture & DesignDates confirmedCheonggyecheon Stream (Cheonggye Plaza to Samilgyo Bridge)

The Seoul Lantern Festival first ran in 2009, and the 2026 edition is the 18th. It takes over Cheonggyecheon Stream from December 11 through January 31, 2027, with the theme “Romance of Seoul: Symphony of Light.” The Seoul Tourism Organization, the city’s tourism agency, runs the event. Light sculptures sit along the stream between Cheonggye Plaza and Samilgyo Bridge, every night from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Who should cross for this

Winter travelers in Seoul, couples, families, and photographers who want a free evening stop that fits beside shopping or a palace day.

A free, central winter event with a long run, which makes it easy to fit into a December or January Seoul stopover from North America or Southeast Asia.

Suggested trip length: One evening within a 3–4 night Seoul stay

Go early in the run or late in the evening

A festival this long invites you to be picky. Weekends close to Christmas and New Year’s Eve are the likeliest to be crowded along a narrow riverside path.

A weeknight just after the 6 p.m. opening gives you the first glow and fewer elbows. Late January, before the final weekend, is another quieter window, though the organizers have not published crowd data, so treat that as local sense.

Dress for the stream, not the street

Cheonggyecheon sits below street level, and winter air settles there. A visitor looking at the sculptures for an hour should plan for gloves and a warm layer.

The path is paved and Visit Seoul lists accessible routes and wheelchair rentals at information points. Allow extra time if you are traveling with a stroller or mobility aid, since the walkway pinches at busy moments.

Pair it with something warm nearby

The stream is in the middle of Jung-gu and Jongno, within reach of Gwanghwamun, Insadong, and Myeongdong. A late dinner after the walk means you will not be queuing at 7 p.m. on a Saturday.

If you are traveling in the final days of December, the festival overlaps with the city’s countdown events. Confirm road closures and crowd limits closer to the night with Visit Seoul.
