Micronesia

“Micronesia” suggests the same Dumont d’Urville-era sorting as Melanesia and Polynesia: “small islands,” named from outside. Navigators and clan systems as older than the label.

For travelers, the useful distinction is scale and access: Micronesia’s leisure products are often measured in tens of thousands of visitors (Palau) or in US-territory hub traffic (Guam), not Fiji’s near-million.

Expect world-class diving and wrecks (Chuuk Lagoon, Palau’s Rock Islands and walls), WWII Pacific history, Compact of Free Association geopolitics, and US-dollar ease on Guam and CNMI.

It is also known for conservation pledges and marine-park fees (expect Palau’s Pristine Paradise messaging) and for airlift that runs through United and Asia leisure carriers more than through Australasian beach charters.

Chamorro, Palauan, Carolinian, Marshallese, and other Micronesian cultures are not interchangeable. Plan for Spanish Catholic layers on Guam, Japanese colonial memory across the region, and US military presence as living context—not just museum captions.

Kiribati suggests a Micronesia filing even while its Line Islands sit far east; say the geography out loud so travelers do not invent a compact map.

Expect Guam (GUM) as the densest US-facing hub into the region, with United and Asia leisure flying. Palau (ROR) via Guam, Manila, Tokyo Narita, and Taiwan among capacity-sensitive links.

Expect Majuro (MAJ) on United’s Island Hopper between Honolulu and Guam. Kiribati’s Bonriki (TRW) and Cassidy (CXI) via Fiji Airways and Nauru Airlines—pick one door. FSM states (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae) should each get their own logistics chapter—do not collapse them into one United weekend.
